:: IMPORT CONTROLS

The import regulations provide that goods may be freely imported and exported provided they are not on the prohibited list and the relevant duty is paid. The import-ban list applies mainly to ready-made garments. This ban will be lifted in 2002. In January 2002, a new schedule comprising some 1000 tariff bands was introduced for ready-made garments. Specific ‘per unit' tariffs were imposed irrespective of the price.

Law 121 of 1982 requires that an importer who wishes to import goods for the purpose of trade must be registered in the Register of Importers and be an Egyptian national. Law 121 requires a number of other conditions such as registration, including conditions relating to minimum capital and past commercial experience.
